History

Blundell's FSL has a rich past, both in its life as a sport club and member's bar, but also its location in Aperfield. Here are some important events in our history...

1835

The Cristy family purchase Aperfield manor, employing their head gardener, Mr. Blundell, on the estate.

1845

Mr Blundell marries the Cristy's cook, and takes possession of Grubb Grounds Farm in Jail Lane.

1970s

Late

Mick Blundell, who lives on the farm, is approached by one of his milk-round customers who suggests he builds a squash club on one of his fields.

1970s

Late

Bromley Council was eventually convinced to change the field in question from
green-belt to brown-belt by David Haslam (the councillor for Biggin Hill at the time).

1980

Construction begins on the new sporting facility, with all members of the family and many friends helping the building work.

1st September

1981

Biggin Hill Squash Club officially opens, providing sport and hospitality facilities to Biggin Hill. At this time, it contains two courts and a bar upstairs.

1985

The first extention, which included two new courts and a new bar, was completed. This had been organised very soon after opening, as the popularity of the club proved that only two courts was not enough. Mick Blundell applied for planning permission immediately, which was duly granted.

1980s

Late

A plan to build a fifth, glass-backed court was granted planning permission, but was not built due to a financial crash that severly affected the leisure industry.

1st January

1994

Kim Cross, daugther of Mick and Shelia Blundell, takes over the club, after the couple decided to retire in 1993.

2006

The club becomes an LLP

2006

Due to an increase in the social side of the club, specifically more parties and functions being hosted, an extention to the kitchen and storage rooms was built at the front of the building.

2017

With a wane in the popularity in squash and racketball in the 2010s, it was decided to increase the variety of sports possible at the club. A dance studio was built on the ground floor, with a snooker room constructed above it.

2017

As the name Biggin Hill Squash Club no longer represented the large variety of sports on offer at the club, it was renamed to Blundell's Fitness, Sport, and Leisure.

Present Day

This combination of hard work, gracious help, and new ideas have allowed Blundell's FSL to thrive through difficult times, and still be the community hub it is today.

We hope to continue to make history far into the future!
